英语水平逐渐提升的一个标志是英语用词的宽度增大，即表达一个概念的词汇和句法选择余地越来越大。例如，要表示【她一动不动】时，我们可以使用She is motionless.也可以使用She remained motionless. 会用第二句的肯定知道第一句，这就避开了重复使用be动词，导致单词使用宽度不大。今天我们就讲讲remain用作联系动词的四个句型。
Remain首先用作不及物动词，表示【留下，剩下】，如She remained where she was.（她留在原来的地方）。它用作联系动词时，意思是【保持(某种状态)】，有下面四种句型：
1. 跟形容词
He remained poor for a long time. 长时间他都很穷。
Jim was trying very hard to remain calm. 吉姆极力保持镇静。
Elizabeth remained silent. 伊丽莎白一直没讲话。
She remained unconscious for several hours. 她不省人事有好几个小时。
2. 跟名词
I want to remain friends with you. 我想继续和你做朋友。
These two deaths have remained a mystery. 这两人的死一直是一个谜。
The pattern remains the same throughout a lifetime. 这个模式一生都不会变。
In spite of their quarrel, they remain the best of friends. 尽管有过争吵，他们仍是最好的朋友。
He will remain (as) manager of the club until the end of his contract. 他将继续担任俱乐部经理，直至合同期满。
This, coupled with the fact that flying machines remained universally a subject for jeers and derision, made the brothers secretive. 这一点，加上飞行器仍是人们普遍嘲笑和讥讽的对象，使得兄弟俩只能暗地里行事。
3. 跟分词
Train fares are likely to remain unchanged.火车票价很可能会保持不变。
This site remained undiscovered, though long sought, until recent times. 虽经长期寻找，但该遗址直到最近才被发现。
He remained unmoved after I had talked with him for hours. 虽然我同他说了数小时,他仍无动于衷。
David's murder remains unsolved. 戴维被杀的案子仍未侦破。
My opinion remains unchanged. 我的看法一如既往。
4. 跟从句
The fact remains that inflation is unacceptably high. 事实是通货膨胀率仍高得离谱。
The question remains whether he was fully aware of the claims.问题是他是否完全意识到了这些要求。
The fact still remained that Nicky was too young. 事实仍然是尼基太年轻。

两点值得注意：
1）remain后面接用分词时，建议大家先构成过去分词后，再在该分词前加上un-，表示主语一直处于某种状态，是一种被动含义表达方式。如The theory remains untested.传递的意思就是The theory is still not tested.（该理论尚未得到检验）。
2）remain用作不及物动词时，后面可以接用动词不定式，表示【仍需去做（或说、处理）】
Much remains to be done.还有很多事要去做。
Much still remains to be done to wipe out discrimination. 消除歧视仍然有大量工作要做.
Though a number of descents have been made, much of it still remains to be explored. 虽然已多次有人进入洞内,但仍有不少地方有待勘探.
How such problems will be worked out remains to be seen. 怎样解决这一类问题尚待进一步观察。
该句型中，还可使用先行it 。例如：
It remains to be seen whether you are right.你说得对不对还有待证实。
It remains to be seen if the show will still find favor with a 1990s audience. 这个节目是否能继续赢得90后观众的喜爱，还要拭目以待。
It remains to be seen whether they can talk him over. 他们能否说服他还有待观察。
It remains to be seen who will be the victor in the contest. 谁将在这场比赛中获胜还得等着瞧.
