The period I"d like to say is late Tsing dynasty, and it is the originated time of prostitutes. It has a very interesting historic background. During that period, prostitute had a rather high social status. It was not pay-and-play business, if a customer wanted to order the service of a prostitute, he needed to please the prostitute first by singing songs or writing poems. So it had unique cultures.

The origin of the prostitute is from Peking Opera. There were no actresses in Peking opera in Tsing dynasty, because women had very low social status. So female roles of every opera play was cast by young men who were under 17. And some men did so well in casting female characters, some wealthy people paid them for having sex. That was how modern prostitution began in China.

When women began to take part in Peking Opera, women prostitute came up to the front stage. Some of them could be very famous that they even could be invited to Royal parties or became one of wives of Tsing emperors.

《梦华琐簿》：“戏园分楼上、楼下。楼上最近临戏台者，左右各以屏风隔为三四间，曰官座，豪客所聚集也。官座以下场门第二座为最贵……”另开戏之前，戏园有“站条子”（或称“站台”）的恶习。主要男旦扮好戏装站立台口让“老斗”（指嫖客）们品头论足。一旦在台上看到相识的老斗，他们就会眉眼传情，作姿作态，并且还会直接下台前去侍候。当时在演出安排上，流行由主要男旦演“压轴儿”，之后的“大轴儿” （送客的大武戏）将散之际，男旦换装完毕与老斗登车，去附近酒楼或下处“销魂”去了。

男妓，顾名思义，就是男性娼妓，古时叫“兔子”、“小唱”，即“小娼”。也有称之为“小手”的。后称为“像姑”，即像姑娘的意思。后谐音为相公，自称“堂名中人”。寓处称“相公堂子”或“下处”。八大胡同之男妓，据史书记载，自嘉道时已兴盛了。

华胥大夫于道光八年所作《金台残泪记》中载:“王桂官居粉坊街，又居果子巷。陈银官当居东草厂，魏婉卿当居西珠市口。今则尽在樱桃斜街、胭脂胡同、玉皇庙、韩家潭、石头胡同、朱茅胡同、李铁拐斜街、李纱帽胡同、陕西巷、百顺胡同、王广福斜街。每当华月照天，银筝拥夜，家有愁春，巷无闲火，门外青骢呜咽，正城头画角将阑矣。当有倦客侵晨经过此地，但闻莺千燕万，学语东风不觉，泪随清歌并落。嗟乎！是亦销魂之桥，迷香之洞耶？”

男妓的下处与嫖规是:当时入妓馆闲逛称“打茶围”，赴诸伶家闲侃，也称“打茶围”。据《清稗类钞》中记载:“客饮于旗亭，召伶侑酒曰‘叫条子’。伶之应召曰‘赶条子’。”“光绪中叶例赏为京钱10千。就其中先付2400文，曰:车资。8000则后付。伶至，向客点头，就案，取酒壶偏向坐客斟酒。斟毕，乃依‘老斗’坐（彼中互称其狎客曰:老斗）。唱一曲以侑酒。亦有不唱者，猜拳饮酒，亦为‘老斗’代之。”又“‘老斗’饮于下处，曰‘吃酒’。酒可恣饮，无熟肴。陈于案者皆碟，所盛为水果干果糖食冷荤之类。饮毕，啜双弓米以充饥。”
