??Are we teaching in a post-method era?

Ask any teacher what method they use in their classroom. Some will say ‘the communicative approach’ others might say ‘P-P-P’ but nowadays there is growing claim that teachers don’t use a method, they are ‘eclectic’ because we are now in a ‘post-method era’. What is the post-method era? Is the concept of “teaching methods” really dead? Find out more in this episode.

??The coursebooks are taking over!

English language coursebook series determine and define current teaching practice. Now more than ever teachers are “teaching the book” rather than teaching learners through any recognizable method. The rise of the non-native English teacher

The English language education world has for many years preferred the ‘native teacher’ to the ‘non-native teacher’. Only very recently have experts in the field started to challenge this preference. Now we are starting to hear genuine claims that in many ways the non-native teacher may in fact be more effective than the native teacher. In this episode we’ll look at the strengths of the non-native teacher.

??English as an International Language

The vast majority of English language learners will never in their lifetime use English to communicate with a native speaker of English. Why then do we continue to teach learners to mimic the English of the native speaker. In the globalized world of English language learning should we simply be teaching “International English”. In this episode we’ll explore this complex and controversial question.

Washback and the Chinese English Language Learner

It has long been believed that tests directly influence the educational process. One common assumption is that teachers will be influenced by the knowledge that their students are planning to take a certain test and will adapt their teaching methodology and lesson content to reflect the test’s demands. How are China’s English tests shaping us as language teachers and how will this change in the future? Are China’s English tests going to change and will this mean that we as teachers need to change?
