一般过去时表示过去某时发生的动作或存在的状态 ， 而过去完成时则表示过去某一时间以前 ， 即过去的过去发生的动作或存在的状态 。
但有时某个动作虽然发生在“过去的过去” ， 但也可用一般过去时 。

如：He hoped to come with us ， but he was too busy.I thought I could go ， but I cant.（2） 若没有明确的语境 ， 通常用过去完成时表示过去未曾实现的想法 ， 否则可能有歧义 。
如：I hope to pass the examination.（只表明过去想通过考试 ， 但并未说明通过与否 。
）I had hoped to pass the examination.（表示过去想通过考试 ， 但实际上未通过 。
）注意：在叙述历史事件时 ， 不用过去完成时 ， 只用一般过去时 。
如：Our teacher told us that Columbus discovered America in 1492 。
